Robinwood Children’s Activity Centre, Wrexham

 

The Robinwood Children’s Activity Centre is located at Maes-y-Nant near Wrexham, occupying an 8-acre site that was previously the Cross Lanes Hotel, a building dating back to the 1870s.

 

The project brief involved transforming the former hotel and its grounds into a children’s activity centre providing 3-day residential courses for children aged 7–11. The facility needed to accommodate up to 170 children and include a wide range of indoor and outdoor activity spaces to support 15 challenging team-building and imaginative activities.  

 

Storah Architecture was appointed to lead the conversion and extension of the original hotel including coordinating the extensive design team. The project required close coordination with Wrexham Borough Council Planning Department, Natural Resources Wales, Dee Valley Water, and other specialist consultants to secure planning permission, which was granted in the summer of 2017. Storah Architecture also served as contract administrator during construction.

 

The original hotel was reconfigured to include a new kitchen, dining area, changing rooms, activity rooms, and a ‘piranha pool.’ A new accommodation block was constructed, providing dormitories for up to 170 children. The surrounding grounds were reimagined to include a zip wire, a giant swing, a new lake, a climbing wall, a caving zone, an archery hall, and a high-activity building.

 

Construction was completed by Read Construction under a Standard JCT Contract, and the centre opened in June 2018. Since then, the facility has welcomed countless school children, offering them an exciting environment for learning, teamwork, and adventure.
