Raise the Roof, The Hippodrome Theatre, Todmorden

 

The Hippodrome Theatre is an Edwardian theatre, dating back to 1908, located in Todmorden Town Centre. Although not statutorily listed, it is recognised as a non-designated heritage asset by Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council and is as a key building within the Todmorden Conservation Area. The site is highly constrained, with no external footprint, and is located in Flood Zone 3, having been affected by the 2015 floods.

 

The project is one of eight funded by £17.5 million from the Towns Fund to support Todmorden’s regeneration. The brief focuses on enhancing the theatre’s functionality by creating fully accessible, multi-purpose spaces for rehearsals, teaching, production, and workshops. This includes demolishing the existing cinema projection tower, constructing a three-storey extension, and making internal alterations to increase flexible space, rejuvenate the foyer and front-of-house areas, and improve accessibility throughout the building.

 

Storah Architecture initially developed a feasibility study to support the client’s Full Business Case, securing funding through the Todmorden Town Investment Plan. We were subsequently appointed to deliver the project through to on-site completion. To date, we have achieved key milestones, including securing Planning Permission, and continue progressing towards the start of construction.

 

This complex development requires careful consideration of the site’s heritage and constraints. We look forward to construction commencing and will continue working closely with the Todmorden Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society to bring the project to completion.
