The Digital Learning Resource Centre, Northern College

 

Northern College is an adult residential college located within the Grade I listed Wentworth Castle in Barnsley.  In 2023, Storah Architecture was appointed to redevelop the Library and Resource Centre (LRC), located within the historic Long Gallery of the College’s Main House.

 

As one of several ongoing projects at Northern College aimed at enhancing its facilities, this project focuses on creating a centralised, flexible, and IT-orientated student learning environment. Aligned with the College’s wider goal to enhance IT services and improve access to digital resources, the redevelopment modernises the space while respecting its historic character, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of students and staff.  

 

Storah Architecture initially developed a concept scheme for the LRC redevelopment, progressing it to RIBA Stage 2 for the College’s Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF) application. After securing funding, we were appointed to deliver the project through to on-site completion.

 

This project revitalised a stunning historic space, balancing modern functionality with heritage preservation. Our design prioritised improved acoustics for a tranquil learning environment, enhanced lighting for year-round comfort and efficiency, and spatial solutions that maintained the Long Gallery’s open and historic character.

 

Working closely with the College, we curated a material palette that integrates with the building’s heritage. Natural ash and other sympathetic materials were chosen to complement the historic fabric while creating a contemporary, inspiring space for learning and creativity.
