Stones Methodist Church, Ripponden – Refurbishment and Repairs

 

Stones Methodist Church sits on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, in an elevated position overlooking the valley. Its exposed location has made it vulnerable to weather-related damage, particularly on the west elevation, which bears the brunt of the Pennine climate.

 

Since its lower ground floor refurbishment in 2005, the church has become a hub for local life, hosting over 200 weekly community users alongside its regular worshippers. In 2020, the Managing Trustees approached Storah Architecture to address concerns about the building’s performance and to meet the increasing demand for a more versatile ground-floor space to support both worship and community activities.  

 

Appointed as architects for the refurbishment project, we began on-site work in 2024, marking the church’s second significant transformation in two decades. The project included a comprehensive roof renovation, a solar panel system, a new heating system, and extensive repairs to address water ingress issues. These upgrades doubled the church’s usable space to ensure its longevity and resilience.

 

The project also included removing the pews to create a flexible interior, renewal and enlargement of the kitchen and a complete redecoration of the ground floor.

 

By integrating renewable energy solutions and improving energy efficiency, the project has significantly reduced the church’s carbon footprint, delivering long-term cost savings while setting a precedent for environmentally conscious architecture within the community. This refurbishment ensures Stones Methodist Church remains a vital, welcoming, and sustainable space for worship and community activities for years to come.
