Weatherhill Cottage, Mill Bank – Refurbishment and Extension

 

Weatherhill Cottage is a mid-seventeenth century laithehouse farm, situated in an exposed, elevated position above Millbank, Sowerby Bridge. The house is Grade II listed, and in a special landscape area. The house had previously been extended into the barn, leaving a collection of blockwork agricultural out buildings attached to the gable.

 

The brief was to create a modern extension to accommodate the clients and their five growing boys, making them the seventh generation to live in the property. The design aimed to contrast the traditional form of the existing listed building with a contemporary addition while preserving its agricultural setting and character.

 

Working closely with Conservation and Planning Officers, we ensured the extension respected the heritage of the site. The new space provides individual areas for each family member while bringing everyone together in a central, communal heart of the home.
