The Willows School, Hydeburn
The Willows School is set within a leafy residential area with a picturesque canal-side frontage, providing a unique and inspiring setting for learning. The site presented unique challenges, including a significant slope and full tree coverage protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), requiring a sensitive design approach.
The project began with designing a daycare nursery and later evolved into transforming the site into a DfE-registered, independent specialist day school for all genders aged 5 to 16. The goal throughout was to create a high-quality, sustainable, and functional educational environment.
Over four years, Storah Architecture has played a key role in shaping the school’s development. We navigated complex site constraints, secured planning permission for a highly efficient, low-energy building, and most recently, obtained approval to convert the entire site into a private school.
The new school building was designed to complement its natural surroundings while meeting the needs of students and staff. The project prioritises sustainability, energy efficiency, and adaptability, ensuring a long-term positive impact on both the school community and the wider environment.
